Shoulder pain is the #1 physical issue in paddleboarding

Many years ago I started working with pro athletes competing in SUP races around Europe.

Back then, most of them had had this problem once in their career. One of the reasons for this was the high intensity of their training which increased the stress on their shoulders.

Later on I start working with beginners and leisure paddlers as well, and I found that their incorrect paddling technique, and sometimes their poor strength and posture, were causing shoulder pain even in this group. No matter what activity you’re doing though – you can keep your shoulders healthy by making sure you have these five factors correctly in place:

  • Strength
  • Mobility
  • Stability
  • Control
  • Activation patterns
